Mouse Guarding Your RV (and Boat)

Even though you enjoy sharing your boat or RV with friends and family, you want to make sure that there is a “no vacancy” sign for any pests or rodents who might want to move in. These small creatures are always looking for places to nest. If they seek shelter in your boat or RV, then it is more than an inconvenience: mice and other rodents can cause damage to your property. So, you’ll want to prevent an infestation before they move in.

Follow these tips to prevent animals from making a home in your RV or boat, especially if you are preparing the RV for winter storage:

Never Store Food Inside

Even though you will have food on your trip, make sure that all remnants of food are removed when you get home. It’s best to take out all dried or boxed goods as soon as the vacation is over. Even if the food is in plastic containers or boxes, mice and other rodents can chew through.

Seal the Openings

Even the smallest cracks and gaps can be entry points where the critters can come inside. Wait for the sun to go down, then turn on all of the lights in your RV – including in the cabinets. Step outside and look around to see if you can find any cracks or sources of light that are coming through. Don’t forget to check the firewalls! These openings can be sealed using caulk or spray foam insulation as a safe and effective way to prevent mice from coming inside.

Place Mouse Deterrents Inside

A few simple deterrents can drive the critters away. Some people swear that cotton balls soaked in peppermint oil are a great trick to keep the mice away. Not only does this natural pest control work, but it also adds a fresh scent to your RV. Put the cotton balls in small jars or cups and place them in the cupboards and other crevices all around your RV. Mice don’t like the smell of peppermint, so they will stay far away. Other options include rodent-repellent products or dryer sheets.

Keeping it Clean

Not only is a clean RV more comfortable for future trips but cleaning the rig is essential to keep the pests away. Take a proactive approach to cleaning before and after your trips. Make sure to remove all things that are scented, such as cough drops, soaps, etc.
